The Benefit of the Doubt for Angelo's www.MyPE.co.za: I am a firm believer in giving someone a second chance and after some crappy non-service at Angelo's recently (See: Crappy Port Elizabeth Service), the Longhair, the Kangaroo and I decided to give Angelo's one more chance this morning and have a breakfast. Digressing slightly, it looks like we will have to change the Kangaroo's name to something along the lines of "Kiwi" or "Boy in the Close Companionship of Sheep" as he is quite determined to gap it to New Zealand after Grade 12. Something to do with his apprentice Longhair who emigrated at the end of last year. I am pleased to report that the service was definitely quicker and we had a fairly decent breakfast; an Angelo's for the love of my life, a South African for moi and Honey Toast for the Kangaroo / Sheep Boy and three juices. We were unable to get coffees as their machine had broken down. The three breakfasts came to R81.40 - eat your hearts out expats as todays Forex Conversion converts R81.40 to 5.87 pounds or 8.72 dollars! Even Sheep Boy approved of the new look Parliament Street and bemoaned the fact that when he took his now in New Zealand Lady Love out for two breakfasts that his bill was significantly higher than ours. Now that is what you get for patronising trendy breakfast spots in high value shopping centres! Afterwards we took a little walk down to Mastertons to stock up on what is arguably the best made coffee in the world. And this I can attest to having fielded many enquiries from German and other overseas coffee lovers looking to contact Mastertons so that they can have some of their authentic coffee shipped to them. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Web Site Clean Up Time www.MyPE.co.za: As Port Elizabeth and the world heads into what many say is a challenging 2009, now may be the time for you to update and check your company or personal web site. The following checklist will help you: 1. Check your company information Does your about page draw a current picture of your company? If you have a staff listing on your website, is it up-to-date? Check these pages as well as the copyright notice and the privacy police of your website to make sure that your web pages don't look outdated. 2. Check your contact information Does your website list your current phone and fax numbers? Are the mailing and email addresses listed on your website correct? You'll lose customers if your contact information is outdated. You should also check the email addresses that you use on your website. Are help@yourPEsite.co.za, info@yourPEsite.co.za, order@yourPEsite.co.za, etc. redirected to the correct recipients? Send test email messages to all addresses that are listed on your website. Manny businesses have strong spam filters that delete legit customer email messages. If you have contact forms on your website, make sure that they work and that they are easy to use. If someone doesn't enter a correct email address in your contact form, does the error message make sense? 3. Check your auto-responders Do you send automated confirmation messages when someone sends you an email message? Does your shopping cart send email messages after an order? Check the text of your automated messages to make sure that it says what you want to say and that it contains current information. 4. Check the links on your website The older your website is and the more pages your website has, the more likely it is that it contains some broken links. For that reason, you should regularly check the links on your website. You can find a free link checker in the free demo of IBP. Download the free IBP demo version here and select the link checker under IBP > Tools > Broken Link Checker. 5. Check if your web pages are ready for Google If you want to get high rankings on Google, you must make sure that it's easy for Google to parse your web pages. Can Google easily find all of your web pages? Do you target the right keywords on your web pages? Are all elements of your web pages optimized for Google? You can check this with IBP's Top 10 Optimizer. 6. Submit your web site to relevant directories The MyPE Business Directory (for Port Elizabeth based sites and businesses only) is a good start and then look for more general directories such as Anoox. A good travel directory such as Parctel may help you get the exposure that you need for your Port Elizabeth Guest House or Travel orientated site. Look for sites that have good Page Rank and that link to listed sites via a clean and no-followed link. Read more about clean and no-follow links on the Cape Town Business Directory. The Axandra suite of SEO products contains a continuously updated list of relevant and high ranking directories - download the free IBP trial here. 7. Take Control of Your Online Advertising Many web sites offer some form of advertising, the 'trick' is to make sure that your message is in the RIGHT place to be seen by a potential buyer who lands on a relevant page. You have two basic options: a. Find a relevant web site such as MyPE which is Port Elizabeth orientated and has a tightly categorised directory that ranks well in the Search engines. Over 2000 of the business categories on MyPE are on the first page of Google results for relevant search terms. (Phone Alan on 041 374 5855 for more info). b. Learn how to operate the Google Adwords system where you bid on keywords and broadly select the content providers that will carry your ads. Navigating Google Adwords is initially not for the faint hearted and many companies will offer to do this service for you. Help is at hand if you want to go it alone, though, and you can optimize your Google AdWords with the Successful Advertising with Google AdWords ebook. The economic times are predicted to be tough but it also depends on you whether 2009 will be a successful year for your website or not. If you do the right things, chances are that your website will help you to get more customers this year. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Will the last one to Leave Please Leave the Lights ON www.MyPE.co.za: The recent match against the Highveld Lions last Friday evening ended in the Lions winning the match using the Duckworth Lewis method due to the lights at Sahara Oval St George's failing. The reason for the failure could not be detected and electricians have been working around the clock to ensure the lights are working for the match against the Nashua Dolphins to be played this Sunday evening. Whilst Jumbos Cricket Pty Ltd is very aware of the current electricity saving drive around the country and fully supports this drive, it is crucial that in order to pinpoint the problem, the lights are left on for a considerable period of time. The lights have been switched on intermittently over the last 2 days to give electricians the opportunity to monitor the situation. Eds Note: Whilst at the match and sitting in Castle Corner during the Warriors Lions encounter I noticed that the first time the lights dipped, around 500 people left immediately and then when the lights failed for the second time the spectators left in droves. Not only were the Warriors deprived of a chance (slim as it was) to beat the Lions but the turnover at the bars and concessions stores took a massive dip - money that is sorely needed with the derth of cricket at St Georges this year. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Port Elizabeth Water Quality Debate goes on www.MyPE.co.za: STATEMENT BY NELSON MANDELA BAY MUNICIPALITY'S EXECUTIVE MAYOR NONDUMISO MAPHAZI REGARDING THE WATER QUALITY IN THE CITY. Firstly, I'd like to assure our residents and the countless visitors to the shores of Nelson Mandela Bay that our tap water is drinkable, clean and safe. This assurance is required since recent efforts by political opponents to spread misinformation and as a result fear and deliberately disregarding the great work of our Water and Sanitation Directorate are unnecessarily given space in the public domain. This is indeed unfortunate as we should be concentrating on spreading Christmas cheer and enjoy this very special time in our spiritual history with our families, and not go around attempting to score cheap political points. To prove that it is just feeble electioneering attempts, I'd like to state the following facts: Samples of the raw water are taken weekly from the supply dams to determine the type and amount of chemicals to use to produce drinkable water. The water is then treated and the final water then disinfected before distribution to consumers. During the treatment process the water is tested daily per shift, while a comparative sample is analyzed weekly. After treatment the water is stored in 51 reservoirs that are tested monthly for compliance, while additional sterilization is done at bulk supply reservoirs at the municipality's boundaries to ensure the water is free from bacteria. This is required to ensure the water is safe for consumption after being conveyed up to about 100km. More than 100 water sampling points throughout Nelson Mandela Bay are monitored on a weekly basis to ensure compliance in the approximately 3 500km pipeline network. Some of these sampling points are located at Municipal clinics where the correlation with sickness such as diarrhea can be checked. SANS 241 prescribes a maximum level of 100ppm of total coliforms that is permissible in drinking water. The water samples taken for the months of October and November 2008 shows a 99% compliance, compared to the South African norm of 89% and 90% respectively for the two months. Dear resident and visitor, let us raise our glasses, tipped to be brim with our tap water, and wish each other an enjoyable summer season and a Prosperous New Year! Cllr Nondumiso Maphazi, Executive Mayor EDITORS NOTES: Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Polish Yacht and Crew Rescued www.MyPE.co.za: At 04h00 on the 31st of December 2008 NSRI Port Alfred were activated following an emergency distress call, intercepted by Maritime Radio Services, from the 8.5 metre Polish yacht Ania, reported to have dragged anchor and now in the surf line and drifting ashore at Kenton-on-Sea with two females on-board. NSRI Port Alfred launched their rescue craft Kowie Rescuer and a rescue vehicle was dispatched towing their rescue craft Arthur Scales which was launched on-scene. On arrival on-scene the yacht, with two Polish females on-board, from Szczecin, Poland, the skipper Marta Obieglo, aged 23 and her crew mate Magda Makowssa, aged 21, were found 20 metres from the beach in the surf-line in 4 metre breaking swells after the yacht dragged her anchor during the night while the two females were at anchor and asleep on-board the yacht off-shore of Kenton-on-Sea. Waves were found breaking over the yacht and she appeared to be on the beach. A Chokka fishing boat that responded to the distress call, Shehasta, couldn't get anywhere close enough to render assistance and the Chokka boat stood by in deeper waters to lend assistance if required when the yacht was brought back out to sea! It appears that after the yacht dragged her anchor she missed a reef by centimetres and appears to have dragged anchor to the beach in the pounding surf quite comfortably. NSRI Port Alfred Station Commander Keryn van der Walt said that on their arrival NSRI Coxswain Koos Smith brought the Deep-Sea rescue craft Kowie Rescuer into the surf line in between wave sets, turning the rescue craft around, to face the incoming sets, on a wave, 20 metres from the hard beach, to alongside the casualty yacht and a tow-line was passed, with the assistance of NSRI rescue swimmers Juan Pretorius and Neil Burger, who were aboard the NSRI rigid inflatable rescue craft Arthur Scales which had launched from the beach by this stage, and both rescue swimmers managed to clamber onto the yacht in their effort to get a tow-line rigged, while waves were breaking over the yacht and over both rescue craft. Juan and Neil managed to secure the tow-rope to around the mast, and once the tow-line was secured, with the yacht at this point lying side on to the incoming waves, Kowie Rescuer managed to motor back out through the surf, but the anchor continued to drag, which was still dragging and fastened to the yacht, and which held both the rescue craft and the casualty yacht back in the surf line to face another barage of waves breaking over the craft while Koos attempted to drag pull the yacht out through the surf. Keryn said that fortunately the weak link on the anchor chain eventually broke and despite the yacht being tossed about by waves like a cork behind the rescue craft they managed to tow the yacht out of the surf-line through the breaking swells and into deeper and calmer waters where an assessment revealed that the yacht was taking water. It appears that the keel of the casualty yacht has caved into the main hull and it appears that water is coming in through cracks around the keel but our rescue swimmer Juan Pretorius remained on-board the yacht and a water pump has been rigged and while water is being pumped from the yacht Kowie Rescuer towed the yacht 32 nautical miles towards Port Elizabeth and were met by NSRI Port Elizabeth's Deep-Sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft, East of Bird Island, and the Port Elizabeth NSRI rescue craft has taken over the tow from Port Alfred NSRI and is currently towing the yacht to Port in Port Elizabeth and they were estimated to arrive at 14h15 on the 31st. The yacht was sailing from Durban to Cape Town and her last port of call was East London and her next port of call was Port Elizabeth. The yachts home port is Szczecin. It is understood that the yacht originally sailed from Szczecin. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Day Night Cricket Returns to St Georges www.MyPE.co.za: The Chevrolet Warriors are off to Cape Town on Friday morning for their MTN Domestic Championship match against the Nashua Cape Cobras on Friday evening. Davy Jacobs has recovered from the virus he picked up and is back in the team for the match. The squad is as follows: Jon Jon Smuts, Riaan Jeggels, Zander de Bruyn, Davy Jacobs, Arno Jacobs, Justin Kreusch, Craig Thyssen, Johan Botha, Juan Theron, Wayne Parnell, Corbyn Dolley and Michael Smith. This is the second time in this series that the Warriors will face off against the Cape Cobras. The first time was on the 5th of December when the Warriors lost by 24 runs in Buffalo Park, East London. RJ Peterson was man of the match with bowling figures of 37 for 3. The recent loss to the Lions on 26th of December after the lights failed (Who was it who said the last person to leave Port Elizabeth must turn the lights out?) and the match had to be decided according to the Duckworth Lewis method. At least the Warriors managed to pickup 2 points in an abandoned match against the Titans on the 28th of December placing them ahead of the Lions and second last on the points table. The Warriors return to St Georges Park on the 4th of January for a Day Night encounter against the Dolphins starting at 4:15 p.m. The Dolphins are currently one place ahead of the Warriors and beat the Warriors by 9 runs in their last match played at Kingsmead, Durban, on the 19th of December Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Port Elizabeth Events www.MyPE.co.za: Some tips on using the events calendar on MyPE. You may register to post your Port Elizabeth ONLY events on the Calendar by yourself - depending on the number of spam submissions, registration may be moderated or immediate at the time you register. Easy Registration. There are a number of ways to view Upcoming Events: 1. You can see the lastest events that have been POSTED in a block on the front page of MyPE, just below the Port Elizabeth Forum block on the RHS. 2. You can view upcoming events for the Next 4 Days on the Event Forum Index page. 3. You can view upcoming events weekly, monthly or annually on the Events Calendar page. 4. If you are looking for a specific type of event try a search - registered users that are logged in do not have to complete the Captcha image and have a convenient drop down search box. Try the following searches: 1. For movies at the Bridge use the keyword "bridge" 2. To see all the upcoming Cruise Liners scheduled to dock in Port Elizabeth over the next 12 months use the keyword "cruise" And, the cherry on the top is that as each new event is added to the Calendar a corresponding forum topic is created allowing interested people to pass comments, ask questions and share their experiences as well as allowing the creator of the event to quickly add more information as it becomes available. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Great New Year's Eve Bashes at Hobie Beach and Wells Estate www.MyPE.co.za: This New Year's Eve, go along to Hobie Beach or Wells Estate for some exciting entertainment. Both events will have local and national DJ's who will keep the music going until late as well as great giveaways. At the Hobie Beach bash, popular DJ KC will be the MC, with DJ Slyso joining him, and acts will include Dangatye, Pt Zela and Martin Kernekamp. National artist Patrick Lindoor will also be performing at 22h00. Yet another national act, the Jaziel Brothers will be singing at 23h00 in their first show since they won a Metro Fm award, so it promises to be a special event. This will be followed by a great fireworks display and the traditional countdown to the New Year. At Wells Estate the crowds will be entertained by MC Danny Williams, DJ Thebi and DJ Superman. Other exciting events include performances by national artists DJ Lova and Revolution. Just like the party at Hobie Beach there will be a brilliant fireworks display and countdown. There will also be lots of refreshment stalls at both events. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000 Preserve our Heritage - Say NO to Call Centre in Richmond Hill www.MyPE.co.za: The SAPs have just woken up to the fact that they need to upgrade the 10111 call centre, before the 2010 Soccer World Cup and with the "able" help of the NDPW, they intend rushing through the building of a base station and 50 metre high lattice mast in Richmond Hill. What we were told was going to be a two storey building will in fact be a four storey monstrosity, complete with workshops, that they intend putting up next to the old Erica School, which will effectively block the views of this historic landmark and encroach on the park. This is just one of the many issues in a badly flawed public participation process. But that is not all. Municipal Manager, Graham Richards has given the SAPS a Special Power of Attorney over Richmond Park. What he has effectively done, by handing our park over to the SAPS on a platter, runs in the face of Council policy, about the positive impact of retaining open spaces and green areas and the principles of public participation. The site plan shows that they intend to build the 50 metre high mast, in that section of the park opposite St Phillips Church. This will not only create a visual eyesore, but also reduce the size of the park, in a suburb that can do with more open spaces not less. Despite strong opposition the SAPs state that as long as the project fulfills all the legal requirements, it will go ahead. I say, it may be legal but that does not make it right. It is easy for a bureaucrat from Pretoria to dismiss the views of the community as emotive and irrelevant, but the reality is that we live here. We will have to live with the building blocking our views. We will have to live with the disruption of the comings and goings of shift workers and vehicles coming to the workshop at all times of the day and night, on our already crowded roads. We will have to live with the permanent destruction of the historic ambiance of this area, which is such a special part of this city. We will have to live with the reduction of the size of our park. Fortunately, before any building can take place they have to complete an Environmental Impact Assessment and a Heritage Impact Assessment (Richmond Park is also the site of an old Mfegu burial ground), so we will wait to see what the final outcome will be and in the meantime will continue with our protest action. It is hoped that the people from Port Elizabeth also see the threat of this project to our heritage and raise their voices against it. There are other more suitable sites where the call centre can be put. did the deed and got married in her folk's garden on the 27th of December 1989.
Afterwards it was down to the ABYC for a spot of seafood and a couple of drinks
with mates and family who had come from far, like Sunridge Park. Towards the end
of a long sunny magnificent day we finally worked out that everyone was staying
as they were waiting for us to leave on our honeymoon - silly us actually
thinking that our Wedding Day was ours to do as we please. Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:14:22 +0000
